Sir,
I have the honour to address you on the subject of the financial assistance given from public funds to the three hospitals administered by the Tung Wah Hospital Committee, namely the Tung Wah Hospital, the Kwong Wah Hospital and the Tung Wah Eastern Hospital.
2.
When the last named hospital was opened at the end of 1929 Sir Cecil Clementi in his despatch No.530 of 13th December, 1929, set out the details of the annual grants made to the already existing Hospitals, viz. $20,500 to the Tung Wah Hospital and $43,000 to the Kwong Wah Hospital. As a consequence of that despatch a grant of $25,000 to the Tung Wah Eastern Hospital was approved and this has subsequently been augmented by the customary grant of $2,500 for the purchase of medicines.
3.
The aggregate grant therefore stands at present at $91,000 which is the approved allotment for
this purpose under the sub-head "General Chinese Charities Fund", Head 29 Sub-head 7 in the printed Estimates.
4.
During the years 1933 and 1934 very great difficulty was experienced in obtaining the customary revenue from other sources. The serious depression in trade, of which you are aware, reduced the volume of voluntary contributions and at the same time the rents
